    Growing Forward

As many of you know, the next iteration of the Federal/Provincial Growing Forward program for agriculture is in the planning stages.
The BCAC has participated in discussions so far and will be discussing it again April 21 with BC Ministry of Agriculture folks. These occasions amount to our governments seeking input from the BC agriculture community on how best it could help.

To get an idea on how this program has been delivered in other provinces compared with BC, take a look here: http://www4.agr.gc.ca/AAFC-AAC/displ...10&lang=eng#a3

    What are your ideas?

For all those people who value the investment our governments make in agriculture, whether it results to a return or an enhancements to you personally or to the agricultural community generally, I think it is important for readers to have a sense of why.

One way to do that is to look at the history of these investment initiatives. The following link leads to an article that provides a fairly readable backgrounder explaining why and how federal and provincial governments have financially supported agriculture via funding programs through the decades. I think it provides a helpful context through which to better understand the aim of the Growing Forward consultations now underway. http://www.capi-icpa.ca/pdfs/2011/CA...viewPolicy.pdf

The Growing Forward 2 is making progress. The following is a reference to a report by a federal committee outlining its recommendations based on what it sees as the state of agriculture in Canada at present. You can find the report here: http://www.parl.gc.ca/Content/HOC/Co...RI_Rpt03-e.pdf

This is fairly important stuff when you consider that GF2 is what the federal and provincial governments will agree to spend on agriculture for the next 5 years. This will affect the various farm insurance programs (BRM, and the like), what money will be made available for incentive programs to encourage innovation, improve competitiveness, stimulate better approaches to farming and all things related to it. It will affect you and I.

The BCAC, along with other producer and processor organizations are now meeting with the provincial government to help clarify just what it is the agri community needs for the next 5 years constrained, of course, by the amount of funding governments will make available. A close-to-home example of what we are asking for is funding to support extension services for farmers and greater investment in research.

The referenced report above will give you a sense of what a parliamentary committee thinks is needed.

    What are your thoughts?
