    Water Act Modernization update

The Ministry of Environment has just released a Policy Proposal on British Columbia’s new Water Sustainability Act http://www.livingwatersmart.ca/water...y-proposal.pdf on the Living Water Smart Blog, and is initiating a second round of engagement for January-February 2011. There had been speculation that this whole process would be delayed until after the leadership race, so it is encouraging it is coming out now as agriculture usually does not win when issues become overly politicized. It is also encouraging the document at least to some degree has made the connection between the ALR and access to water.

The Policy Proposal does not provide details, but according to MoE is a summary of the overall framework of the new Water Sustainability Act (WSA) and is purported to reflect the input received through the consultation process. The WSA is intended to respond to current and future pressures on water and the Policy Proposal summarizes the overall framework and key features of the WSA. As indicated on the website, more details will apparently be provided in January.

The BCAC expects to be consulted again during this second round of engagement.

You comments on this newly released information would be appreciated.

For those who may be interested, here is a site that shows Alberta's approach to managing water. It is a very good summary. It was apparently part of a presentation give the Okanagan Basin Water Board by a fellow from the Alberta Water Institute.
