International Day of SOLIDARITY with Peasant Farmers

SOME MAJOR CONCERNS,

POLICY:
District A Farmers Institutes is gravely concerned about the practice of Food Dumping from other countries. This drives the price of product to an artificially low level, hinders healthy local product competition in the market place, and denies our farmers the equitable profit that they deserve. We need a Policy Review Committee for agriculture to protect the local food production that the public so badly needs and wants.

B.C. MEAT REGULATIONS:
These regulations, implemented after September 30, 2007, have produced hardship and business failure in our member organizations. They have reduced the number of small scale farmers raising livestock for local markets, impacting local food availability and food security in our constituency.
We need to bring existing facilities to present standards and to build much needed new facilities for custom slaughter capacity. We need inspectors costs to be maintained by the present government authorities and not foisted off on the farmers and abattoir owners/operators in the near future.

AGRICULTURAL LAND:
We call for a moratorium on land removal from the Agricultural Land Reserve in British Columbia and that more land be allocated to the ALR for local food production in the future.

WATER FOR AGRICULTURE:
The newest Water Act Modernization Plan at the “Living Water Smart BC” website has not addressed this priority of water for agriculture. It mainly proposes private water commercial ventures (groundwater for sale) which, if implemented, will leave private well owners without legal recourse if these commercial operations deplete or end the water supply to their own private property and homes. We need water allocated for agriculture to become a visible priority to all levels of government, to grow food locally for existing communities, to continue in the business of farming. We need the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands to implement a "B.C. Water for Agriculture Plan".

REPRESENTATION:
District A Farmers Institutes wants clear accountability from our senior bodies to represent the issues of local agriculture in BC. We want transparency in the process of decision making on all agricultural issues in the Ministry Of Agriculture and Lands. We want full accounting and accountability on all issues that affect the food producer in the small scale value chain.

BC AGRICULTURAL PLAN:
We want a plan that clearly sets out new funding and new initiatives based on green principles, best practices for eliminating carbon release from the soil, and environmental protection in the small scale farming sector.
